Serve Beyond Cincinnati: New Orleans
This past winter break, I went on a trip with 28 other UC students as a part of Serve Beyond Cincinnati to New Orleans, Louisiana. For one week, we took part in various volunteer activities, including planting trees by the Mississippi River and assisting administration in local schools. I decided to apply for this trip because I wanted to take my volunteer experience outside of what I was comfortable with. It would give me an opportunity to understand how people away from home were going through similar and different things. This week with a new place and new people really lived up to my expectations of how we would all come together to make a positive impact. Going into the trip, I knew about some hardships people in the city had gone through from the media and from videos I had watched about the progress of different parts of the city. However, seeing for myself how people’s day-to-day lives still were told me that we shouldn’t forget about the parts that the news doesn’t tell us. This made me realize that we should be active participants in creating sustainable change. I definitely want to be aware of this from now on whenever I volunteer around home or anywhere else. Things like Bearcat Buddies and Relay for Life don't just happen when we hear about them-they involve people's day-to-day lives, and we can continuously improve upon these sorts of programs by using out experiences with them to voice suggestions and actively change structures that need progress.
As my artifacts for this experience, I have provided daily journal entries and pictures from the trip.
